Alternative Sourcing Done Right

Many of our customers have asked us this question, “How can you reliably second source an analog part, so it works in my application?” It’s a great question, and it is something we have worked very hard to get right.

It Starts with Being Pin Compatible, Spec Compatible, and Functionally Identical

It seems simple enough, doesn’t it? All you have to do is make the part the same as the other company’s part. One of the most common mistakes is improving the specifications. When you look at the datasheet for a Touchstone alternative source IC and compare it to the original source, you will notice that the every guaranteed minimum and every guaranteed maximum specification is identical to the original source.

Roadtesting the Competitors Part

We perform what we call a “roadtest” on the competitor’s part before we begin designing the alternate source. A roadtest is an extremely thorough evaluation where we begin by evaluating a part, in the lab, to the data sheet specifications, and we go on to see how the part performs beyond the datasheet, where it breaks, how it breaks, and what type of inconsistencies the part has. We then take this information into the design process.

Design

Our designers are now prepared not only to meet the data sheet specifications, but to emulate the look and feel of the original part. Our goal is for there to be no perceptible difference between our part and the part we alternate sourcing.

Then we Develop the Test Program

Touchstone’s test development strategy begins by purchasing the original part. For example, if we are developing an alternative source for a Maxim part, then we buy the Maxim part. The test program is now developed using this part as a basis.

We run our parts, the Touchstone alternate source, through the completed test program. Our parts need to pass the same test program that the original source, the Maxim part in our example, has passed.

Roadtest Our Part

We roadtest our part where we perform the same thorough evaluation we previously performed on the original source. We compare the results of our part to the original source. We want to ensure our part will work identically to the original source.

Ready to Announce

Only when our Touchstone alternative source part has been thoroughly tested and the roadtest is complete is our product ready for you to use. Questions? Please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
